Between the months of June to early November skiers and snowboarders flock to the snowy ski fields of Whakapapa, Turoa and Tukino staying in a range of Mount Ruapehu accommodation. Mount Ruapehu is located in the middle of New Zealand’s North Island and forms a large part of Tongaririo National Park. You will find the biggest range of accommodation in Taupo, an 1 ½ hour drive away, but if you prefer to be closer to the ski fields there are plenty of other options available.
The small village of Turangi at the southern end of Lake Taupo has accommodation, shops, ski hire and hot pools and is situated ¾ hour drive from the National Park. Accommodation can be found in motor lodges, motels, riverside cottages, apartments and holiday parks. When you are not skiing for the day you can enjoy white water rafting, trout fishing and kayaking on the Tongariro River which runs alongside the town. If your main interests are skiing, tramping or mountain biking on and around Mount Ruapehu, the best places to stay are at the towns of Whakapapa Village, Ohakune, National Park and Taumarunui.
These towns specialise in providing everything you will need for your outdoor adventure. In between these towns are a good selection of rural retreats and hosted accommodation which are well worth considering. The mountain towns provide a good choice of chalets and apartments, lodges, motels, cabins, holiday homes and hotels. During the winter months the accommodation is often blanketed in snow and cosy fires, drying rooms and comfortable bedrooms are the order of the day. Summer at Mount Ruapehu is spent mountain biking, tramping and sightseeing. Tongariro National Park provides a popular destination for overnight adventures and extended stays giving you the time you need to explore this vast region.
Whatever season you are visiting Mount Ruapehu you won’t be stuck for choice when it comes to accommodation. Although there is no accommodation up at the ski fields, the towns of Whakapapa and Ohakune are at the bottom of Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields so making your way up the mountain is easy. Shuttle buses depart at regular intervals or you can take your own vehicle. Accommodation costs range from budget dorm style accommodation up to luxury hotel rooms. Restaurants, bars and cafes are either on site or a short distance away at the villages. Mount Ruapehu accommodation has a charm all of its own, blending with the landscape and providing an outdoor experience to remember.
