The pretty town of Piahia is the heart of the Bay of Islands. You’ll find everything you need here from fantastic holiday aprtments and hotels and shopping to restaurants and cafes. The town is sheltered from the prevailing winds and follows the beach along the foreshore. Paihia is also the departure point for all charter boats and ferries. There are regular ferry runs across to the charming settlement of Russell where you can visit the historical Duke of Marlborough Hotel, the Russell museum or dine at one of the quaint cafes and restaurants. There are fast catamarans to show you around the islands including the famous Hole in the Rock and fishing charters to take you some of the best fishing spots in New Zealand. Paihia is also close to the Waitangi Treaty grounds, considered to be the birthplace of New Zealand. Waitangi is rich in Maori and early European history.
